What does BIOS stand for, and what is its role in a computer?

BIOS stands for Basic Input/Output System. It's a firmware embedded on a computer's motherboard that initializes and tests hardware components during the startup process. BIOS also provides a set of low-level routines that the operating system and applications can use to interact with hardware components. Essentially, it prepares the computer for booting the operating system by ensuring that all the hardware is functioning correctly and setting up the necessary hardware interfaces.
